I. Introduction
 
At age fourteen, Dustin Lance Black was grappling with questions of identity and self-worth unknown to most high school students. 1 Dustin was gay and to him this meant that he had only two, equally bleak options: to "vanish" into the periphery or to commit suicide. 2 Indeed, having never learned of a single lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) figure "of any consequence" at home or at school, Dustin had lost hope of ever being able to live openly as his true self. 3 That was until a San Francisco area theater director told him about Harvey Milk, a man who did not hide his homosexuality, was elected to public office, and "lit the fire of today's national and global LGBT civil rights movement." 4

Milk's story marked a turning point in Dustin's life; for the first time in a long while, he felt hopeful. 5 Inspired by the knowledge that an openly gay man had achieved so much and fought so hard to ensure that Dustin and other sexual minorities would not be treated as second-class citizens, Dustin no longer wanted to disappear. 6 Instead of trying to retreat, he "started trying to excel" - and excel he did. 7 On February 22, 2009, Dustin accepted an Academy Award for the original screenplay he wrote for the feature film Milk, based on Harvey Milk's life and legacy. 8
