This presentation is dedicated to the memory of a great man, John Van Duzer.

John and his family, I and my family lived in Hamilton.

I knew John there because his son Peter and my son Ben were and are close friends. They are now adults with their own families. I knew John as a fine man, and a man devoted to his family. We lived close to one another in Hamilton, then when we moved to Toronto he and Joan lived only a few doors away from me. Even when we had a summer place in the beautiful Muskoka region, John and Joan lived nearby.

It is clear that my life and John's closely paralleled one another, and I came to know him as the fine, kind and committed man he was. However, the parallel in our relationship goes beyond that.

In Hamilton, I was the Professor of Pediatrics at the new and revolutionary medical school at McMaster University. It was and is a school committed to determining needs in medical care and education, and to developing programs to serve those needs . . . and in my case, the needs of children.

John too, was concerned about the needs of children and there our careers and commitment paralleled. His work led to better care for families in distress through an enlightened, efficient family court system. Throughout his career he was an advocate on behalf of children and families. John received an honorary doctorate from McMaster University ...
